Assessments vs. Surveys

Assessments vs. Surveys

Many of our customers, especially coaches, come to us after having first tried well-known survey tools and discovering that they don’t offer the features that they need. Even with a free plan, learning a new software tool is an investment of valuable time. Spending that time only to discover that a survey is not actually what you need can be frustrating.

Surveys: A one-way street

A survey is intended for a single purpose – to gather information for use by the survey author. Feedback to the respondent is typically limited to a simple Thank You. Common uses for surveys include:

Surveys are a one way street

  • Customer service – How was your experience at our store?
  • Product feedback – How did your recent purchase work out for you?
  • Scientific surveys intended to gather data on a particular topic for a study or paper

In each of these cases, the respondent answers the questions and the data goes to the survey author, who typically analyzes the aggregated data. Usually, they’re not interested in what any individual responses are.

Assessment Generator can certainly be used for this type of survey, but it offers much more. If you need more than a survey, read on…

Assessments: A Conversation

An assessment often starts out as many surveys do — the respondent answers questions and provides information. But that’s only the beginning. An assessment also provides feedback directly to the user. That feedback is the secret sauce that makes assessments so powerful for lead generation.

After a respondent submits an assessment, Assessment Generator calculates a score based on how the user answered the questions. You, the assessment author, define how different responses to each question contribute to the final score.

Type Based Assessments
You can also create assessments with multiple types or categories. You assign each question to a category and give your respondents a separate score for each category. Learn more about type-based assessments.

After the score is calculated the user receives feedback, either on-screen or via email, telling them how they scored (the numeric value) and more importantly what their score means.

It’s that last part — your expert evaluation of them based on how they answered your questions — that provides enormous value to your respondent.

This exchange also benefits you:

  • Your analysis of their results demonstrates your expertise and establishes your credibility with the respondent.
  • Delivery of the report establishes a relationship with the prospect. When they receive their report, your prospect has received something of legitimate value from you, for free. This makes them more likely to want to return the favor, in the form of responding to future communications from you.
  • This relationship forms a basis for further conversation. When you reach out to them again, it will be in the context of already having communicated with them. You can speak to them as an existing client instead of as a cold contact.
  • Your report can also invite your prospect to contact you to learn more about their assessment results.

Assessments can be used to engage your website visitors who want to know more about what services you have to offer. Having your website visitors “test themselves” without obligation is a terrific way to gain your respect and keep them coming back.

15 Ways to Use Assessments to Gather Information & Attract Customers

15 Ways to Use Assessments to Gather Information & Attract Customers

Want to discover some new ways to use assessments in your business?  Here are 15 approaches that are sure to inspire you.

1. Employers – Create a personality assessment. Use pre-hire personality screen assessments when making a hiring decision. Make it fast, easy, and fun. See how your potential new hire will fit in your company culture.

2. Real Estate Agents – Determine the type of residence that is best for the visitor to your website. Use an assessment to establish the price range a potential buyer can afford.

3. Customer Service – Assess how an employee represents your company when they answer the phone for you.

4. Software Tech – Determine the depth and type of software knowledge a potential employee has to evaluate their fit for an open position. Help employees demonstrate any new abilities by letting them take assessments several times a year.

5. Hardware Tech – Make sure your employees and potential employees can address customer problems.  Re-assess their abilities a couple times per year.

6. Coach Training – Help your coach trainees determine their niche or the coaching type they are best suited for or the type of clients they should pursue. Using the knowledge gained through assessments, the coach can encourage and support the development of the trainee and enable the trainee to connect more powerfully with others.

7. Coaches – Use assessments to help potential clients determine areas of strength and weakness. This helps you understand what areas to focus on, and gives you something personal to discuss with them during your introductory conversations. This personal connection helps to build trust and drive sales conversions

8. Employment Agencies and Temporary Agencies – Give your clients assessments to determine the best job they are suited for. Having the results of the assessment in hand, a career professional can more intelligently discuss what the client’s needs are and how the career center can assist with meeting those needs.

9. Fitness Centers – Create assessments for new clients to determine their preferred styles of exercise, their motivation/communication preferences, and their fitness goals.

10. Athletic Teams – Properly designed assessments can determine a team member’s strength as well as any problem areas or emotional barriers that could prevent a player from achieving peak performance. Assessments can also help determine the level of stress a player may be experiencing.

11. Clubs – Use assessments to determine which level a person should be put into to properly balance competition, personalities, and performance. This approach would benefit tennis clubs and golf clubs, for example.

12. Business Niche – Create assessments to help people determine the best business they may be suited for, such as a franchise, home-based, or daycare. Link results to additional assessments to determine the type of daycare, for instance, or the type of franchise that is best suited for a particular person.

13. Relationships – Determine where your website visitors are in their relationships, what issues they are facing, and what their goals are for better relationships.

14. Families and Parenting – Use assessments to help a person learn where they may need help in their parenting or family relationships (or why they are experiencing unhappy situations) and then offer materials for improving the problems.

15. Employees 3-Way Assessments – (1) Create a self-assessment for each employee, (2) the manager’s productivity assessment and (3) finally the HR assessment.  Combine the results of these 3 to ensure a productive annual employee performance review.

Assessments are easy to administer and convenient to use with today’s online tools. Assessments can be completed online and they are scored and results are provided automatically.  You receive their results via email and you can also view the results online.
